Selling it… or sousing it?

For as long as I can remember, my family has had a subscription to Consumer Reports, a magazine that shares what consumers think about products.  Even with the onslaught (er… bombardment) onset of thousands of reviewers on the Internet, Consumer Reports (or Consumer Distorts, as my husband and I have come to affectionately call it) is still a best seller 1.  One reason for this, I believe, is that there are no ads that the reader has to weed through to get to the magazine content.  Also, there’s a feature in each issue called “Selling It: Goofs, glitches, gotchas.”  It’s always fun to see what kinds of strange, weird, and otherwise hilarious things one finds in advertising and consumer products.

I saw this ad just this morning and thought it a bit bizarre… a zoo hosting a wine-tasting as a fundraiser?  Even having “wine” and “zoo” in the same sentence seems rather strange… at least to me.  Stay with me here, I know the supporters of the zoo are trying to find the section of the population with the most money to donate, but aren’t zoos normally patronized by people with children?  If you click on the scanned picture of the ad (above), notice that it includes the phrase, “21+ Only. Valid ID required for entry.”  Now that’s going to bring a lot of parents out… right?

Okay, so I started formulating this idea for a blog post (and perhaps even a weekly meme).  But, while typing this out, I started searching to see how preposterous the idea of having a wine-tasting as a zoo fundraiser really was.  Come to find out, wine-tasting zoological fundraisers seem to be the “thing to do.”  I found some type of wine-tasting fundraiser at zoos in the following cities (listed in no particular order)…

  • Louisville, Kentucky
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Milwaukee, Wisconsin
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Washington, D.C.
  • Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Orlando, Florida
  • Sacramento, California
  • Phoenix, Arizona
  • Cincinnati, Ohio
  • Calgary, Alberta, Canada
  • Toronto, Ontario, Canada

So, I guess the only thing bizarre about this is me and my thoughts on it.  What do you think?

Also, I’d like to know your thoughts on starting a weekly meme similar in context to Consumer ReportsSelling It feature.  Do you like the idea?  What are the odds that you’d participate?  Tell me your ideas about a name for the meme.

Disclaimer:  I was not given anything to write this blogpost.  I have no affiliation with the Chattanooga Zoo (or any zoo except the one in my house! :)) Consumer Reports, Consumers Union, or Consumer Distorts.  My husband and I coined the phrase “consumer distorts” on our own… not realizing there would ever be a website with the same title.
